Chapter Fourteen

I don’t mind taking risks, especially if the payoff is worth it. The words had been playing in Jack’s mind ever since she’d thrown them down.

The woman had him tied up in so many knots it was a wonder he could walk straight. It didn’t matter how many times he told himself she was a reporter, he was like a stupid moth drawn to the flame. He couldn’t get close enough even knowing that he might get burned.

He understood what the problem was: He wanted her. Badly. It didn’t make sense, but then sex never did. It came down to chemistry and theirs was explosive.

He prided himself on his discipline, yet he had none around her. Maybe if he got her out of his system, he’d be able to function the way he normally did.

It sounded like a plan, he thought, as he paced the living room of her house and checked his phone. T.J. had texted that he was running late. Jack wouldn’t take a chance on leaving Gemma without protection, but it meant it was going to be close if he wanted to meet his informant.

You gots to come.” She latched onto his hand and tugged him towards the kitchen, where he found Sylvie in front of the stove. He raised an eyebrow in question, but she simply smiled and nodded towards the chair at the table.

Jack pulled out a chair and sat down, watching with bemusement as Dana bustled around as fast as her short legs carried her to drag a stepstool to the counter where she reached up to the cupboard and brought down two plastic plates. She placed one in front of him and then another in front of the next seat. She then went back to the stepstool and got out two plastic cups from the cupboard, one pink and the other yellow.

“You gets the yellow one,” she said, handing him the cup.

“Are we having a party?”

Dana shook her pig-tailed head. “Nope. It’s snack time. We gots to drink milk at snack time.” She hurried over to the fridge and took out the milk, which she carefully carried back to the table. Jack took it from her and poured himself a small cup and some for her.

“Isn’t it late for snack time?” It was well past four and, from the smells coming from the stove, he imagined dinner would be served soon. Even so, he played along. Jack
